2008 Headstart: Transition to School

Transition to School

Transition is a gradual and ongoing process, which enhances continuity of children’s learning from home to preschool to school in a caring, supportive and challenging way.

Roxby Downs Area School and Roxby Downs Kindergarten are committed to providing a school visiting program that is a smooth process from one place of learning to another for our children.

This process will cater for the individual needs of both parents and children, providing an introduction to and orientation of the school in all aspects of staff, buildings, yard and classroom expectations.
The school visits allow children to become familiar with the locality of their classroom, and other school facilities such as the canteen and toilets, their teachers and school routines.

Headstart: Beginning Junior Primary

Headstart is the intake class for all Receptions beginning school.  The children stay in the class for a period of
1 to 2 terms depending on their needs. At the end of each term the teacher/s in the Headstart Class will observe and assess each child individually to determine whether they are ready to progress to a Reception class.

Headstart is an important introduction to the Roxby Downs Area School Early Childhood programme spanning Reception through to Year 2. At Roxby Downs Area School we ensure that continuity of learning exists for your child from the beginnings in Kindergarten, into Reception, through Year 1 and into Year 2 to ensure that the essential groundwork is given.

Our Headstart programme plays an integral role in this but does not stand alone from the whole Roxby Downs Area School Early Childhood experience.

Curriculum

The program in the Headstart class focuses on the 4 main areas we believe to be essential to form this foundation –

Literacy
Numeracy
Social Skills, and
Play

It sets the outlook for developing the basics in learning, behaviour, physical and social development in our school. This important learning is then consolidated in the complementary programmes provided as your child progresses through the year levels.

The program supports the development of these essential skills as well as fostering a positive attitude towards learning.

Of interest

Lunchtime activities – areas of the school such as playgrounds, a sand play area (R-2 only), a computer room, recreation centre, library, drama room and games room are open to students at lunchtime, often on a roster system.

Healthy snack time – all classes have a healthy snack time of fruit and vegetables at approximately 10 am each day. Other healthy initiatives include water being permitted on desks for drinking throughout the day, the wearing of broad-brimmed hats when outside and an inclement weather policy allowing students to remain inside in extreme heat or on rainy days.
